Course Objectives:
This class discusses various theories and practices of curatorial issues and practices. After short historical overview of this field, the students will get an insight in the formal and conceptual discussions of today. Various working areas like profit and not-for profit institutions, as well as off-spaces, galleries, and museums will be discussed. In the end, the student should be knowledgeable current theoretical discussions as well as practices of curatorial work.
Course Content:
Who is a curator? The basics of this class is about the main meaning of being a curator and the way it developed as a profession over time. There will be many examples of curator work provided for the students in this class. The main information about what a curator does in museums, biennials, exhibitions and festivals will also be given to the students. Personal or group projects chosen from different disciplines will be asked from students as a final assessment medium. The aim of this project is to give students an idea about the process of work for a curator (however utopic). This project is thought to be a good experience for students who aim to be future curators.
